The IDEA Lab fabrication space (MRDC 2nd floor) is available for prototyping, assembly, and project storage by mechanical engineering students.
The primary rules are as follows:
- To use this lab, you must gain access via the steps listed below
- Fabrication is only allowed during staffed hours listed below
- You must sign in/out when using the lab by tapping your buzzcard
- Clean up after yourself and return your tools to their appropriate locations
- Follow all safety rules as listed around the room and in the documents below
To attain access:
ME 2110: Attend the course safety lecture and complete the SUMS requirements listed below.
All other courses: Read through “protocols for access and utilization of the IDEA Lab: Beyond ME 2110” document and complete the SUMS requirements listed below. The SUMS requirements should take ~5 minutes and must be re-completed every 4 months.
SUMS Requirements:
The SUMS requirements include a safety agreement and a short safety quiz. The minimum allowable quiz score is 12/14 so if you miss more than two questions, you will need to retake the quiz after 24 hours from your previous attempt. Please review any questions you miss since adhering to these rules is imperative; some rules may have changed since you last used the lab.
To access the SUMS agreement and quiz,
- Go to: https://sums.gatech.edu/sums_react/MyTraining
- Login with your GT credentials
- In the “Select Equipment Group” space on the middle-left side of the page, type “IDEA Lab”
- Select “IDEA Lab (IDL)”
- Scroll down and you will see the “GWW Safety Agreement” and the “Safety Quiz” requirements
- Click on each requirement and complete as requested
Once you have completed these requirements, you will see a green check mark next to each. You now have access to the IDEA Lab.
When entering the lab, please tap your Buzzcard on the card reader at the SUMS kiosk attached to the column inside the lab. When you are leaving the lab, please tap your Buzzcard again and you will be logged out. Login/out is required to use the IDEA Lab.
Project Storage:
For non-ME 2110 projects, you must fill out this form. 24/7 Buzzcard access may be granted for the lab only for project storage purposes. Fabrication may only occur during staffed hours.
